Mini Olympics

What better way to learn about the Olympics that to host our own mini Olympics. We focused our crafts on props for our olympic games.

We cut out the centre of paper plates, painted them and made our own olympic rings.

Heavy concentration by Eryn painting the red ring

So proud of her final product

Posing with our olympic rings

And just as must concentration from Cammy painting the blue ring

We each chose a country and pasted their flag onto a poster which we would use to tally our medals at our mini olympics. We made a flag for each of our chosen countries.

We learnt about the round shape of the world, pinned up an atlas and found the countries we had chosen on the atlas.

Add in a bit of geography

Happiness is Eryn being creative

Great fun was had making medals out of crazy dough. It was a neat way to reinforceĀ number recognition for Camryn. And Eryn was in her element when we painted the medals in SHINY gold, silver and bronze.

And so when Craig was here in Cape Town for the weekend, we decided it was good timing for our own mini olympics. Lee-Ann joined in the fun and games and we had a great memorable olympic games, an event I think the children (and the adults) found very special.

Let the games begin…

Camryn leading us in opening ceremony

We started off with an opening ceremony, more like a country march with our flags while cammy played the drums for us.

A nifty way of keeping Australia in mind

Lee-Ann promised a dance for the opening ceremony but some how she managed to get out of it! Instead she became all patriotic and wore her flag in her hair for the rest of the evening!

Due to our stadium being slightly below olympic standards, we modified our events somewhat:

1st Event – crab walking

The first heat of crab walking

The second heat of crab walking

The final between daughter and daddy...the younger won

Then came the crawling race

Crawling race - first heat

Definately a skill we have outgrown as the children reached the finals

Wow, this is rather painful on the hands and knees for us oldies

Egg and Spoon Race

Egg and spoon race

The best part of this race was that we used Lindt chocolate for the eggs and got to eat them afterwards.

Balloon hopping races

Balloon Hopping Races. We must get those lines repainted on our track as Craig seems to be battling with his direction…

Surprisingly mini man managed this rather well

Tummy balloon races look easier than what they are…

Peter and Craig paired up for tummy balloon races

Lee-ann making a plan with her short parter

Especially when one partner is somewhat shorter than the other. Well done Lee-Ann for improvising.

We did target shooting slightly different by aiming our bean bags into a potjie pot.

Girls showing the boys how it's done

Girl power

Target Shooting with an african flavour

And of course the girls won that!

At some point, Eryn got a little distracted from the javelin competition that was at hand. Playing with Tom our black Labrador won her interest for pretty much the rest of the olympic games.

our little animal crazy eryn

On the other hand, Camryn had obviously been practising his javelin throw because he showed us just how it was done:

First you go like this...

Then you go like that...

Lee-Ann with her javelin

Lee-Ann throwing a decent distance with her javelin even though her style is not quite as dramatic as Camryn’s

And it was quite clear that a certain little man had been watching the discus throw on the olympics channel too.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

And some of the adults attempts:

It looked good except that the discus landed at my feet

It's as if Cammy is saying "Uncle Craig, you really should practice more..."

And to finish off our games, we did some goal scoring.

Eryn has made a come back

Another confused lefty who kicks with her right foot

Here Lee-Ann is finally getting a turn. We had to make Camryn sit on the chair and wait his turn as he kept hijacking the ball. Please note his not-s0-impressed face.

Peter forgetting we will inside our house and not on a real soccer field

Craig showing us how it's done

Thank goodness I have been honing my soccer skills as my hubby took this pretty seriously!

And we even concluded our games with a medal ceremony much to the children’s delight. We had Chariots of Fire blaring in the background, a not-so-sturdy podium and medals to present to the children.

A proud moment

Also super proud

A family moment

And we finished off with a group photo (after a few failed attempts at camera setting)

Olympic Games 2012

Eryn giving her brother a well done hug, and mom trying to keep both children from falling off the podium.

The girls super proud of shiny gold medals.

Now look at all my shiny medals

Of course Eryn collected all the medals afterwards – they are all shiny!

And after a great evening filled with fun and games, we ended it off perfectly – bubbly, chocolates and laughter. Maybe not quite in the same fancy surroundings as in true olympic style but we were comfy and that’s what mattered.

June 2011

So June didn’t exactly lend itself to a whole lot of schooling in the formal sense. We found ourselves exploring our new surroundings, spending the sunny days on the beach, and meeting new people. What we did discover is a wonderful library (actually two) in close proximity of our house. Because the thought of taking Camryn into a library is a little daunting at this stage, we came up with a plan. We take trips to the library, Peter and the kiddies play in the park that is behind the library, and I found myself grabbing a few books that I think the kiddies will enjoy. Eryn and Camryn are loving their storytimes, and every now and then we have a guest reader:

Eryn loves Aunty B's story telling

Also found a wonderful toy shop specialising in wooden toys that was having a 50% sale. My mission was to find timeless toys, toys that the kiddies will not grow out of soon. Based on the amount of fun I have had playing with them, I think our new toys are going to last.

A classic train track

Eryn is a keen doctor and loves her ambulance set

Eryn (and her mom) enjoys Quadrilla

And of course we always learn things from our outings:

Eryn learnt that not everybody thinks her bowl of nuts is yummy!

Camryn learning the art of sharing popcorn

First trip on a bus

The art of drawing a family emblem

Fine motor skill for cammy and counting for eryn

A bit of music in between

Writing in the sand

Eryn reading to Camryn, and yes Camryn is running around without pants and with his sisters shoes on

a bit of muscle building too

lots of strength building in the park

some ball skills

feeding the goats and other animals at the giraffe house

And like I said we did do a bit of “school” work:

Eryn's first picture of her mommy

a cow eryn made with different size squares

some exhibits

And that is how we spent our month
